Acute febrile nonhemolytic transfusion reaction AFNTR

  • Facts:
    Antibodies in the patient's plasma react with donor leukocytes causing activation of complement components and release of inflammatory cytokines
  • History / PE:
    Fever and chills during or within a few hours of transfusion completion
  • Treatment:
    NSAIDs
    Acetaminophen
  • Notes:
    Leukocyte depletion techniques can reduce probability (eg. cell washing)
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Urinary tract infection
    Drug fever
