Anterior cord syndrome

  • History / PE:
    Weakness and loss of pain/temp below level of lesion
    Joint and position sense (DC/ML) remains intact
  • Diagnosis:
    MRI
  • Treatment:
    Corticosteroids within 8 hrs of spinal injury
  • Associated With:
    Burst fracture of the vertebra
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    1) Central cord syndrome (burning and paralysis in upper extremities, common in older people with forced neck hyperextension injuries

    2) Brown Sequard syndrome (acute hemisection of cord)
