  • Facts:
    SHORT ACTING ( < 6hrs)

    Halcion (triazolam)
    Versed (midazolam)
    Xanax ( alprazolam )

    INTERMEDIATE ACTING (6-24hrs)

    Ativan (lorazepam)
    Restoril (temazepam)
    Serax (oxazepam)
    Klonopin (clonazepam)


    LONG ACTING ( > 24hrs)

    Valium (diazepam)
    Librium (chlordiaepoxide)
    Dalmane (flurazepam)
  • Complications:
    With overdose, see slurred speech, unsteady gait, drowsiness
    Do NOT see respiratory depression or pupillary constriction (like with opioid OD), treat with flumazenil
  • Indications:
    Specific or simple phobias
    ETOH withdrawal (chlordiaepoxide)
    Muscle spasms
    Bridge to antidepressant medication
    Hypnotic / anxiolytic
    Anticonvulsant
    Catatonic schizophrenia
  • Notes:
    Contraindicated in patients with PTSD (use SSRIs and CBT)

    For elderly patients, use INTERMEDIATE acting benzos (minus Klonipin) because no active metabolites
