Endophthalmitis
Facts
:
Infection within the eye, particularly the vitreous
MC form is postoperative endophthalmitis (usually within 6 wks)
History / PE
:
Hypopyon (pus in the eye)
History of
recent eye surgery
Swollen eyelids and conjunctiva
Corneal edema and infection
Decreased visual acuity
Diagnosis
:
Gram stain and culture vitreous
Treatment
:
Intravitreal antibiotic injection
Vitrectomy
Differential Diagnosis
:
Uveitis (HLA B27 related conditions)
Conjunctivitis (vision not affected)
Corneal uceration
Cavernous sinus thrombis
