Factor V Leiden

  • Facts:
    MC inherited disorder causing hypercoagulability and predisposition to thrombus, especially DVT of the lower extremities

    Result of a point mutation in gene encoding for the coagulation factor V

    Factor V becomes resistant to inactivation by protein C
  • History / PE:
    Recurrent thrombotic complications
    Recurrent miscarriages (women)
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Protein C deficiency
    Protein S deficiency
    Antithrombin III deficiency
    Hyperhomocysteinemia
    Antiphospholipid syndrome (acquired)
