    Frequent cause of corneal blindness in the US
  • History / PE:
    Pain, redness in the eye
    Photophobia
    Blurred vision, tearing
  • Diagnosis:
    Corneal vesicles and dendritic ulcers
    Multi-nucleated giant cells (epithelial cell scrapings)
  • Treatment:
    Topical or oral antiviral therapy (eg. acyclovir )
  • Associated With:
    Excessive sun exposure
    Outdoor occupation
    Immunodeficiency
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Fungal keratitis (multiple stromal abscesses)
    Bacterial keratits (contact lens wearers)
    Corneal abrasion (history of trauma, see in slit lamp)
