Hypertension HTN

  • Facts:
    140/90 on three separate occasions

    Severe HTN=>210 systolic, >120 diastolic, or end organ effects (requires immediate treatment)
  • Diagnosis:
    Urinalysis, BMP, EKG, H/H
  • Treatment:
    First line = thiazide diuretic, beta blockers (provided no contraindications)

    Second line = ACEIs, ARBs, and Ca Channel blockers

    Pt with comorbidities = ACEIs

    Pregnant pts = hydralazine, labetalol, and alpha-methyldopa

    HTN emergency = nitroprusside , nitroglycerin , or beta blocker (eg. labetalol)
