    Results from degeneration and atrophy of the outer retina, retinal pigment epithelium, Bruch's membrane, and choriocapillaries

    Activities that require fine visual acuity (reading, driving) are usually affected first
  • History / PE:
    Progressive and bilateral loss of central vision
    Patients > 50 yo
    Distortion of straight lines, such that they appear wavy
    Navigational vision preserved
  • Diagnosis:
    Drusen deposits in the macula
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Peripheral retinal degeneration
    Glaucoma
    Cataracts
  • Risk Factors:
    Increasing age
    Smoking
