  • Facts:
    MC found in premature infants

    Usually presents 3-10 days after birth, with the introduction of formula feeding

    Bowel injury from perinatal asphyxia
  • History / PE:
    Increased gastric residue, bile-stained vomitus
    Pneumotosis intestinalis
    Abdominal distension, vomiting
    Frank blood in stools
  • Diagnosis:
    Leukocytosis
    Acidosis
  • Treatment:
    Aggressive resuscitation with ABx
  • Complications:
    Bowel perforation
    High mortality
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Food poisoning (no frank blood in stools)
