Babesiosis Babesia microti

  • Facts:
    Illness caused by parasite Babesia
    Transmitted by Ixodes tick
    Endemic in the NE United States

    Clinically significant disease occurs in immunocompromised and asplenic patients
  • History / PE:
    Tick bite
    Jaundice
    Hemoglobinuria
  • Diagnosis:
    Giemsa-stained thick and thin smear
    Elevated ESR
    Decreased serum complement levels
  • Treatment:
    Quinine-clindamycin
    Atovaquone-azithromycin
  • Complications:
    Renal failure
    Death
  • Notes:
    Rare to see a rash (unlike other tick borne illnesses)
