Bronchiectasis
  • Facts:
    A type of obstructive lung disease caused by cycles of infection and inflammation in the bronchi/bronchioles that leads to permanent fibrosis, remodeling, and bronchi dilation

    Bronchi dilation causes impaired clearance of secretions and resultant airway obstruction
  • History / PE:
    Hemoptysis
    Cough
    Mucopurulent sputum
  • Diagnosis:
    High resolution CT scan (HRCT) is diagnostic and shows dilated airways / ballooned cysts at the end of the bronchus (mostly lower lobes)

    Tram lines (dilated bronchi), areas of honeycombing on CXR
  • Treatment:
    Antibiotics
    Lobectomy (localized disease)
  • Associated With:
    Acquired ( TB, recurrent pneumonia )
    Inherited ( cystic fibrosis )
  • Risk Factors:
    Smoking
