Central retinal vein occlusion CRVO

  • History / PE:
    Acute/subacute monocular loss of vision
  • Diagnosis:
    "Blood and thunder" appearance on fundoscopic exam (optic disk swelling, retinal hemorrhage, dilated veins, cotton wool spots)
  • Treatment:
    None shown to be really effective
  • Associated With:
    Coagulopathy
    Hyperviscosity
    Chronic glaucoma
    Atherosclerotic risk factors (HTN, diabetes)
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Central retinal artery occlusion (pallor of optic disk, cherry red fovea, painless loss of vision in one eye)
