Heat stroke Hyperthermia

  • Facts:
    Failure of thermoregulatory center to dissipate heat at the rate necessary to maintain a euthermic state

    Nonexertional
    Patients with chronic medical conditions

    Exertional
    In otherwise healthy individuals, conditioning in extreme heat
  • History / PE:
    Temperature > 105 F
    Altered mental status
    Dehydration
    Epistaxis
    Hypotension
  • Diagnosis:
    Rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown)
    Renal failure
    ARDS
    Coagulopathic bleeding
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Thyroid storm
    Malignant hyperthermia
