Hemolytic uremic syndrome
  • Facts:
    A type of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia

    Typically a disease of young children, usually follows recent diarrheal illness due o the pathogens E.coli, serotype 0157:H7, Shigella, Salmonella, Yersina, and Campylobacter species

    Classic triad of hemolytic anemia , ARF, and thrombocytopenia
  • History / PE:
    Bloody diarrhea
    Sudden onset abdominal pain
    Purpura / petchiae
    Hypertension
    GI bleeding
  • Diagnosis:
    Schistocytes and giant platelets (blood smear)
    Markedly elevated BUN and creatinine
    Moderate leukocytosis
  • See Also:
    1) TTP (HUS triad plus fever and neurologic changes)
    2) HELLP (found in pregnant women)
    3) ITP (isolated thrombocytopenia)
    4) DIC (abnormal clotting factors)
