Leukoplakia
  • Facts:
    Usually caused by chronic irritation to the oral mucosa due to smoking, alcohol, or ill fitting dentures
  • History / PE:
    Hard to remove white plaques/patches on oral mucosa
  • Complications:
    Risk of transformation to squamous cell carcinoma
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Oral candidiasis (white plaques can be scraped off)
    Herpes simplex virus type 1 (do not cause white plaques)
