    Calculate anion gap ( Na - [Cl- +HCO3-] )
  • Diagnosis:
    Increased anion gap ("MUDPILES")

    M ethanol / formaldehyde (formic acid)
    U remia (impaired excretion of H+)
    D KA (beta-hydroxy butyrate, acetoacetic acid)

    P araldehyde
    I ntoxication
    L actic acidosis (lactate)
    E thylene glycol (glycolic acid, oxalic acid)
    S alicylates (ASA ingestion)

    Normal anion gap (8-12 mEq/L)

    Diarrhea
    Glue sniffing
    Renal Tubular Acidosis
    Hyperchloremia
