Patent ductus arteriosus
  • Facts:
    Connection between aorta and pulmonary artery
  • History / PE:
    Continuous, machine like murmur
  • Treatment:
    Prostaglandin E1 infusion (keeps PDA open)
    Indomethacin (prostaglandin inhibitor, closes PDA)
  • Notes:
    Continuous murmur is caused by blood flowing through the PDA from the aorta to the pulmonary artery (both systolic and diastolic aoritc pressures are greater than pulmonary pressures)
  • Associated With:
    Congenital rubella
    Eisenmenger syndrome
