Pyelonephritis Kidney infection

Pyelonephritis
  • Facts:
    Infection of the kidneys and ureters, caused by ascending infection or hematogenous spread

    MC organisms ( E.coli > Proteus > Enterobacter )
  • History / PE:
    Flank pain
    CVA tenderness
    Fever
    Dysuria, pyuria, bacteriuria
  • Treatment:
    Levofloxacin PO 7 days (IV if pt has nausea/ vomiting )
  • Complications:
    Abscess
    Renal papillary necrosis
    Renal scars
  • Risk Factors:
    Vesicoureteric reflux (or incompetency)
