Reye syndrome Fatty liver with encephalopathy

  • Facts:
    Children ( < 15 years old ) treated with ASA for viral fever
    Characterized by diffuse mitochondrial injury
    Mortality rate 30-35%
  • History / PE:
    Vomiting
    Agitation
    Lethargy
    Restlessness
  • Diagnosis:
    Hyperammonemia
    Prolonged PT
    Hypoglycemia
    Extensive fatty vacuolization of liver
  • Treatment:
    Glucose with FFP
    Mannitol (decrease cerebral edema)
  • Complications:
    Fulminant hepatic failure
  • Associated With:
    Aspirin
