Acute angle closure glaucoma
  • Facts:
    Acute increase in intraocular pressure
  • History / PE:
    Unilateral eye pain, reddness
    Acute vision loss
    Nausea/ vomiting
    Patients complain of seeing "halos" around eyes
    Mydriasis
  • Diagnosis:
    Ocular tonometry
  • Treatment:
    Acetazolamide (decrease intraocular pressure)
    Laser peripheral iridotomy (permanent fix)
  • Complications:
    Permanent vision loss within 2-5hrs after symptom onset
  • Associated With:
    Periods of prolonged pupillary dilation (darkened movie theater)
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Migraine
    Cluster headache
    Temporal arteritis
    Keratoconjunctivitis
