Amaurosis fugax

  • Facts:
    Caused by retinal emboli from the ipsilateral carotid artery
    May be warning sign for an impending stroke
  • History / PE:
    Transient, PAINLESS, monocular vision loss ("curtain falling down")
  • Diagnosis:
    Zones of whitened, edematous retina (ophthalmoscopy)
    Cholesterol particles (Hollenhorst bodies)
    Duplex ultrasound of the neck
  • Treatment:
    Atherosclerosis management
  • Associated With:
    Atherosclerosis
    Cardiovascular disease
    HTN
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Central retinal artery occlusion
    Central retinal vein occlusion
    Vitreous hemorrhage (hard to visualize fundus)
