Bacterial vaginosis
  • Facts:
    Most common cause of vaginal infection
    Caused by the imbalance of naturally occurring vaginal flora
  • History / PE:
    Abnormal, homogenous white vaginal discharge
    "Fishy" smell
  • Diagnosis:
    Amsel CRITERIA (3 out of 4 needed)
    1) Thin, gray-white vaginal discharge
    2) Vaginal pH > 4.5
    3) Positive "whiff" test with KOH
    4) Clue cells
  • Notes:
    Not transmitted through sexual intercourse
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Trichomonas vaginitis (flagellated organisms)
    Candidiasis (thick, white discharge)
