Facts
:
Acute, benign, self limited disease caused by EBV
History / PE
:
Fatigue/malaise
Sore throat
Splenomegaly
Posterior cervical lymphadenopathy
Palatal petechiae
Diagnosis
:
Heterophile antibodies (
monospot
)
Atypical lymphocytes on smear
Complications
:
Autoimmune
hemolytic anemia
and thrombocytopenia
Splenic rupture
Notes
:
Monospot test may be falsely negative early in mono
Patients can resume normal activity when spleen no longer palpable (usually 1-3 months)
Differential Diagnosis
:
Acute pharyngitis
CMV mononucleosis
(no pharyngitis)
