Pre-eclampsia

  • Facts:
    Continue seizure prophylaxis for 24hrs postpartum
    Signs of magnesium toxicity (loss of DTRs, respiratory paralysis)
    Treat magnesium toxicity with IV calcium gluconate
  • Diagnosis:
    MILD
    New onset HTN (SBP >140 or DBP > 90)
    Proteinuria (>300mg/24hr)
    Occurs >20wk gestation

    SEVERE
    BP > 160/110
    Persistent HA
    Visual changes (scotomata)
    Hyperreactive reflexes
    RUQ pain
    HELLP Syndrome
  • Treatment:
    Delivery of baby
    Methyldopa (first line medication for HTN in pregnancy)
    Magnesium sulfate (seizure prophylaxis)
