Pseudogout

  • Facts:
    Form of acute arthritis
    Induced by the release of calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate (CPPD) crystals from sites of chondrocalcinosis (calcification of articular cartilage)
  • History / PE:
    Acute pain, swelling, redness, limited ROM of affected joint
    Often occurs in context of recent surgery, illness
  • Diagnosis:
    Synovial fluid analysis (to rule out other causes)
    Rhomboid shaped, positively birefringent crystals
  • Associated With:
    Hyperparathyroidism
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Gout
    Septic arthritis
