Pulmonary hypertension


  • Facts:
    Mean pulmonary pressure of > 25mmHG (normal = 15mmHg)

    Primary
    Most often in young or middle-aged women

    Secondary
    Left sided heart failure
    Mitral valve disease
    Congenital heart dx with L to R shunt
    Hypoxic vasoconstriction 2/2 chronic lung dx (eg. COPD )
  • History / PE:
    Exertional brethlessness
    Dyspnea, weakness, fatigue
  • Diagnosis:
    Enlargement of central pulmonary arteries (CXR)
    Right ventricular hypertrophy
  • Complications:
    If untreated, leads to cor pulmonale
