Renal cell carcinoma
  • Facts:
    Adenocarcinoma of tubular epithelial cells
    80-90% of all malignant tumors of the kidney
    Tumors can spread along renal vein to IVC
  • History / PE:
    Hematuria, flank pain, palpable flank mass (classic triad)
    Anemia
    Polycythemia ( increased EPO )
    Varicoceles that fail to empty in recumbent position (gonandal vein obstruction)
  • Diagnosis:
    CT scan
  • Treatment:
    Surgical resection
    Sorafenib, sunitinib (new tyrosine kinase inhibitors)
  • Associated With:
    von Hippel-Lindau disease
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Polycystic kidney disease
    Bladder cancer
  • Risk Factors:
    Male gender
    Obesity
    Smoking
