  • Facts:
    Separation of layers of the retina
    Occurs in patients aged 40-70 years old
    Usually inciting event occurs months before detachment
  • History / PE:
    Photopsia (flashes of light)
    Floaters (spots in the visual field)
    "Curtain coming down over eyes"
  • Diagnosis:
    Grey, elevated retina (ophthalmoscopic examination)
  • Treatment:
    Laser therapy and cryotherapy
  • Associated With:
    1) Myopia or trauma (retinal breaks lead to fluid seeping in between retinal layers)

    2) Marfan's syndrome
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Amaurosis fugax
