:
Parasitic infection caused by the roundworm trichinella
Acquired by eating undercooked pork that contains encysted Trichinella larvae
Disease occurs in 3 phases
History / PE
:
Larvae invade intestinal wall
(phase 1)
Abdominal pain, diarrhea,
vomiting
Larval migration
(phase 2)
Local and systemic hypersensitivity reaction
Splinter hemorrhages
, conjunctival/retinal hemorrhages, periorbital edema, and chemosis
Larvae enter skeletal muscle
(phase 3)
Muscle pain, tenderness swelling, weakness
Blood count usually shows eosinophilia
Differential Diagnosis
:
Infective endocarditis
