  • Facts:
    Caused by circular movement of electrical activity around atrium at rate of 300 times per minute
    Ventricular rate determined by AV node conduction
    MC is a 2: 1 heart block
  • History / PE:
    Usually asymptomatic
    Palpitations
    Syncope
    Lightheadedness
  • Diagnosis:
    Regular rhythm
    Atrial rate 240-320 bpm
    "Sawtooth" appearance of P waves
  • Treatment:
    Anticoagulation
    Digoxin
    Rate control
    Cardioversion
  • Notes:
    Digoxin (digitalis) used for both atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter
