Chalazion Meibomian gland lipogranuloma

Chalazion
  • Facts:
    Sterile granulomatous inflammation of meibomian glad of the eyelid
  • History / PE:
    PAINLESS localized swelling over weeks
  • Treatment:
    Warm compresses (dissolve the lipids)
    Lid hygiene with special shampoo
  • Complications:
    Recurrent chalazion requires histopathologic examination because there is a risk for underlying sebaceous (meibomian gland) carcinoma
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Stye (painful swelling)
    Basal cell carcinoma
