Isolated systolic hypertension ISH

  • Facts:
    Important cause of hypertension in the elderly

    Thought to be caused by rigidity (decreased elasticity) of the arterial wall, which leads to an increased systolic blood pressure, without concurrent increase in diastolic blood pressure
  • Diagnosis:
    Widened pulse pressure
  • Treatment:
    Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ)
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Aortic regurgitation (widened pulse pressure)
