Optic neuritis

  • Facts:
    Typically presents in people aged 20-45 years old
    Females are more commonly affected
  • History / PE:
    Afferent pupillary defect, with central scotoma
    Changes in color perception
    Decreased visual acuity
    Pain on eye movement
    Rapid impairment in vision in one, or both, eyes
  • Diagnosis:
    Swollen disc (fundoscopy)
  • Associated With:
    Multiple sclerosis
    Drugs (eg. ethambutol, hydroxychloroquine )
  • Differential Diagnosis:
    Anterior uveitis
    Orbital cellulitis
    Open angle glaucoma (gradual vision loss)
    Episcleritis
