Renal tubular acidosis RTA

  • Facts:
    Inability to secrete hydrogen or reabsorb bircarbonate
    Results in a non-anion gap metabolic acidosis
    Three main types
  • History / PE:
    Presents as failure to thrive in infants
  • Diagnosis:
    RTA Type I (distal)
    RTA Type II (proximal)
    RTA Type IV (distal, MC form)
  • Treatment:
    Goal is to neutralize the acid in the blood
  • Complications:
    Chronic acidity of the blood leads to growth retardation, kidney stones, bone disease, chronic kidney disease , and ESRD
