Inability to secrete hydrogen or reabsorb bircarbonate
Results in a non-anion gap metabolic acidosis

History / PE
:
Presents as failure to thrive in infants
Diagnosis
:
RTA Type I
(distal)
RTA Type II
(proximal)
RTA Type IV
(distal, MC form)
Treatment
:
Goal is to neutralize the acid in the blood
Complications
:
Chronic acidity of the blood leads to growth retardation, kidney stones, bone disease,
chronic kidney disease
, and ESRD
