Disseminated intravascular coagulation Consumptive coagulopathy

  • Facts:
    Pathological activation of clotting factors, that leads to the formation of small blood clots within the blood vessels
  • History / PE:
    Extensive bleeding (from venipuncture site, surgical wounds)
    Renal failure
  • Diagnosis:
    Prolonged PT, PTT
    Increased in fibrin split products (d-dimer)
    Decreased hematocrit, platelets
  • Treatment:
    Underlying pathology/disorder
    Platelet transfusion, cryoprecipitate (coagulopathy)
    Aminocaproic acid (second line)
  • Associated With:
    1) Pregnancy ( placental abruption , amniotic fluid embolism)
    2) Major trauma / burns
    3) Sepsis
    4) Malignancy
