Facts
:
A type of microangiopathic
hemolytic anemia
Typically a disease of young children, usually follows
recent diarrheal illness
due o the pathogens E.coli, serotype 0157:H7, Shigella, Salmonella, Yersina, and Campylobacter species
Classic triad
of
hemolytic anemia
, ARF, and thrombocytopenia
History / PE
:
Bloody diarrhea
Sudden onset abdominal pain
Purpura / petchiae
Hypertension
GI bleeding
Diagnosis
:
Schistocytes
and
giant platelets
(blood smear)
Markedly elevated BUN and creatinine
Moderate leukocytosis
